Travelling sustainably in Reykjavík doesn’t have to feel like hard work. From choosing the right hotel to walking, biking and drinking straight from the tap, a few easy choices go a long way.

Travelling more sustainably sounds great. Spending your holiday calculating your carbon footprint? Slightly less great.

Luckily, Reykjavík makes doing things a little greener surprisingly easy. Clean water comes straight from the tap, the city is wonderfully walkable, geothermal energy does a lot of the heavy lifting, and if you choose the right place to stay, someone else can do quite a bit of the eco-thinking for you.

Here are a few easy ways to make your Reykjavík stay more sustainable. Minimal effort required.

1. Stay at Iceland’s Only Green Globe Certified Hotel

Well, this is an easy one.

Start by staying at Eyja, the only Green Globe certified hotel in Iceland.

Sustainability isn't an extra feature we've added to make ourselves look good. It's built into how we operate, from reducing waste and avoiding unnecessary washing to the products we choose and the way we think about energy, food and everyday hotel operations.

The idea is simple: we do the eco-thinking so you don't have to.

You check in. Get comfortable. Sleep ridiculously well. We'll worry about the rest.

2. Drink the Tap Water

Please, step away from the plastic bottle.

Iceland has exceptionally good tap water, and in Reykjavík you can simply refill your bottle straight from the tap. It’s fresh, cold and requires approximately zero trips to the supermarket.

One reusable bottle + Icelandic tap water = a very easy win.

3. Walk More

Reykjavík is a small city, which is excellent news for your step count.

From Eyja, you can easily head towards Reykjavík city centre, the waterfront, shops, cafés, restaurants and many of the city's best-known sights on foot.

No car. No parking. No problem.

And you’ll probably discover more along the way.

4. Or Grab One of Our Bikes

Want to cover a little more ground?

We have bikes available for rent at Eyja, giving you an easy way to explore Reykjavík without jumping in a car.

Cycle along the waterfront, explore different neighbourhoods or head into the centre for coffee, shopping and sightseeing.

Good for the planet. Good for the legs. Excellent excuse for an extra pastry.

5. Eat and Drink Local

Choosing local isn't only about sustainability, it's also one of the best ways to actually experience Iceland.

Look for Icelandic ingredients, local producers, independent cafés and restaurants that make the most of what's available nearby.

At Eyja, we prioritise sourcing locally whenever quality and availability allow. Because sometimes the better choice is also simply the tastier one.

6. Don't Ask for What You Don't Need

Fresh towels every morning? A completely cleaned room after you've been out for three hours?

Hotel habits can create a surprising amount of unnecessary washing, water use, energy consumption and waste.

At Eyja, we don't automatically clean your room every day. For longer stays, housekeeping is provided after three nights, and if you'd like something before then, you can simply ask us.

Less unnecessary washing. More time to enjoy Reykjavík.

Your room really doesn't need more attention than you do.

Sustainable Travel, Minus the Homework

Travelling more sustainably doesn't have to mean changing your entire holiday.

Walk when you can. Grab a bike. Drink the tap water. Support local businesses. Reuse what doesn't need replacing. And choose places that are already making more conscious decisions behind the scenes.

That's our approach at Eyja.

Less effort. Better choices. More Reykjavík.
