Some evenings in Iceland are worth staying up for. Not because there’s another restaurant to try or one more bar to find, but because something rather special might be happening above your head. The northern lights are a good reason to put on an extra layer and look up.
The important word is might. Clear skies and the right conditions can bring a beautiful display, but the aurora doesn’t take reservations. Think of it as a possibility to make room for, rather than an appointment in your itinerary.
First, You Need a Dark Night
Northern lights season in Iceland runs from late August to mid-April, with September through March bringing long, dark evenings. Darkness is only part of the story, though. You also need a clear view of the sky. Some nights bring ribbons of green; others bring clouds and a perfectly reasonable excuse for an early night.
Check the Clouds, Not Just the Aurora
Before heading out, take a look at the Icelandic aurora forecast. Pay attention to cloud cover as well as expected activity: even a lively display needs a gap in the clouds. A darker moon can make faint lights easier to see, but a moonless night isn’t essential. Clear skies matter more.
Make a Plan. Keep It Flexible.
Staying at Eyja? Make your evening plans around the forecast, not the other way round. Darker surroundings give you a better chance to enjoy the sky, but a long drive is no substitute for clear conditions. Leave yourself time to wait, and don’t turn the evening into a race to tick something off a list. You’re on holiday, after all.
Let the Weather Have the Final Say
If you’re heading out of Reykjavík, check road conditions and the weather forecast before leaving. Use designated parking, stay on marked paths and never stop on the road to watch the lights. Let conditions decide how far you go. No photograph is worth an unsafe journey.
Warm Layers. A Steady Camera. A Little Patience.
Dress more warmly than you think you need to, give your eyes time to adjust and put your phone away for a while. If you do want a photograph, keep the camera steady, try an exposure of a few seconds and leave the flash off. Then remember to enjoy the part that isn’t on a screen.
